my brother and his wife are raising free-range chickens! They started with 9 chicks; 3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 3 Light Brahmas…it was a lot of fun watching them skip their way through the grass, stopping here and there to peck the ground. when they found a patch of grass that wasn’t too hot or too cool they would nestle down with each other and start to doze off almost instantly (when they’re this young they’re easily effected by the temperature). all weekend we had to make sure the coop wasn’t too hot or too cold, which meant my brother waking up in the middle of the night to make sure the heat lamp didn’t need to be turned on or to make sure nothing found it’s way into the coop. I can’t wait until fall when each bird will yield about 1 egg per day and they’ll be one step closer to their goal of growing almost all of their food themselves. so proud of them. (and jealous)
